World Time Attack Challenge – Day 2

Engines were blown and body kits literally torn from cars, as the World Time Attack competitors pushed themselves and their machines to the limit. With Mark Skaife’s 1999 V8 Supercar lap record demolished by a full second, the CyberEvo car came back from a blown head to take the lead. “Tarzan” Yamada drove the car hard till the very last lap, where after turning hard into Turn 1, the downforce on the rear wing caused it to physically tear off the car. The Cyber Evo’s best lap was an insanely quick 1:30.5870.

Right behind the CyberEvo was Sierra Sierra with their incredible EVO 8. Saturday was really a head-to-head battle between the two Mitsubishis, both bettering even the most optimistic of lap time predictions. David Empringham pushing hard for the win, doing lap after lap whilst the Japaneese teams pitted early, trying to shave those seconds off.

In third place, flanking Sierra Sierra on both sides was “Tarzan” Yamada again, this time in the Tomei/Cusco Subaru. A very consistent car with a fearsome sound under throttle, there was only 0.017 of a second between 2nd and 3rd place.

An action-filled two days, both on and off the track ensured no spectator went home unsatisfied.

World Time Attack Challege 2010 - Eastern Creek - Australia:
1st - CyberEvo - Japan, 2nd - Sierra Sierra - USA, 3rd - Tomei/Cusco - Japan

Engines were blown and body kits literally torn from cars, as the World Time Attack competitors pushed themselves and their machines to the limit.

Team USA took an early lead with the Sierra Sierra EVO setting a blistering lap time of 1:32.2480 on Day 1 as the fastest of Japanese teams CyberEVO nearly destroyed their engine in the heat of the battle for the lead. Those predicting Day 2 to be a one-horse-race however, were proved wrong.

CyberEVO pit crew worked overnight fixing the engine and on their first morning session smashed Mark Skaife's long-standing V8 Supercar lap record by a full second, taking the lead from Team Sierra Sierra. The Americans responded by bettering their Friday lap time and the head-to-head battle between the two Mitsubishis continued throughout Day 2, both surpassing even the most optimistic of lap time predictions.

CyberEVO's driver - Eiji "Tarzan" Yamada drove the car hard till the very last lap, where after turning hard into Turn 1, the downforce on the rear wing caused it to physically tear off the car. David Empringham pushed the Sierra Sierra EVO hard for the win, finishing only 1.29 seconds behind CyberEvo's winning lap time of 1:30.5870.

In third place, flanking Sierra Sierra on both sides was "Tarzan" Yamada again, this time in the Tomei/Cusco Subaru. The fearsome-looking and very consistent car was only 0.017 of a second behind Empringham's EVO. The fastest Australian contender, Warren Luff in a Prep'd Motorsport Lotus Elise finished in the 4th place, missing out on a podium spot by a only half a second.

An action-filled two days, both on and off the track ensured no spectator went home unsatisfied. For a full list of results, lap times and placings click here.

I went up for this - excellent event, hoping it runs as an international event again next year. The Sierra Sierra Evo & Cyber Evo were incredible, especially being able to get up close to the cars in the pits. There was a Suzuki Swift out there too weighing 1000kg with full Evo 5 running gear.
