Received this earlier via media alerts, I actually can't believe Conlon supports this blatant cash grab (it's the sort of thing people expect from Rann or Foley).

$120 for minor defect, $250 for major defect...

Anyway this hasn't been through Parliament: SAPOL and DTEI need to come to an agreement, then it goes to Cabinet for approval - once approved, then through to to Parliament House Legislative Review Committee for approval. So it's highly unlikely it'll be enforced on 1 July as reported in the media, but I imagine it'll be around soon after.

If they where serious about road safety they would do the same as NSW & have compulsory vehicle checks or Green slips done every 12 months when rego is due.

yeah that’s right Morph it has to be approved by both houses of parliament before it can be made law and get the assent, and let’s hope that there is a disagreement between the two and it doesent pass.

Unfortunately, it's not SAPOL who set these rules, nor do they receive any financial benefits from the new fines (as cliche as it sounds, in this circumstance they are in fact just doing as they are told)... But no doubt they'll be copping most of the flack :/

Hendo,
But there are different ways to enforce the same rules.

You can be an absolute _, or you can be reasonable.

Best way with cops, is always give them the benefit of the doubt. I used to get pulled over all the time in my GTR! I know a few who are totally reasonable and understanding people... Always treat them as if they are and you'll probably find you have a much greater chance of getting the same in return! :)

I'm sure if any of us were cops just trying to do our jobs politely, and we copped abuse from the second the conversation started, we probably wouldn't hold much tolerance either!

True, but they also get "quotas" set by their superiors, which, if not met, are held against the officers when their performance reviews get handed down.

A lot of the time it's not the "foot-solder" on the ground setting the agenda here, they're just the poor guys who have to enforce the laws, regardless of whether said law is in the people's best interests or not.

It's the money grubbing pollies, desperate for more cash to shove their snouts in, that are making this happen, have no doubts about it.
