Time Attack Gear Guide

Postby Autosport on Tue May 08, 2012 9:57 am

With the upcoming time attack season nearly apon us, I thought it might be a good idea to run through the basic items you will need to kit yourself, and your car out for a time attack event (or any sort of motorsport for that matter)

1. Helmet
Probably the most obvious thing that you will need, and with good reason... you only have one head! For all Level 2 Speed Licence events, such as Time Attacks and hillclimbs, you can use either an Australian Standard helmet, or a SNELL Motorsport Series helmet. We have a variety of options available, as everyone has a different shape head, but typically we sell a lot of Australian Standard Helmets, as they are good value for money and will do a good job of keeping your head safe. Pricing in a full face helmet starts at only $99... so there should be no excuses for not upgrading your old smelly one that has been sitting in the cupboard for 20 years either!

2. Fire Extinguisher
Another must have item, must be mounted somewhere within reach of the driver, typically down in front of one of the seats. For all CAMS events, they must be at least 1kg in size, have a metal mounting bracket and most importantly be in date. Cheap insurance for your car - $25 for GSR/EVO club members

3. Sticker Sheet
A sheet with a bunch of funny looking squiggles and shapes on it, usually the ones that will only be needed are the blue battery triangle, showing the battery location, and some 'tow' point stickers, to show the marshalls where to hook up the tow rope if you need assistance to make it back to the pits. All stickers need to actually be stuck onto the panels, magnetic ones have a habit of blowing off halfway down the back straight. These are only $10, and triangles are available seperately for $4, so if you want to peel them off in between events they are pretty cheap to replace.

4. Tow Points
Following on from having these labelled - they also need to be capable of passing a 40mm diameter object through them to allow for all the different towing devices used by the track staff. We sell a variety of different tow hooks and loops, in both metal and fabric strap types. Make sure that if you are fitting aftermarket points on, that they are mounted to somewhere nice and solid, such as the end of a chassis rail, as sometimes cars will need to be pulled onto a tow truck with wheels locked, or across the infield of Mallala, behind a ute being driven by the next Craig Lowndes  It is also worth noting that you will need to have a tow point fitted to both the front and rear of the car. Tow loop prices start at $20

5. Clothing
Although the regulations require you to only have ankle to wrist length clothing, a single layer suit is a lot more fire retardant and sometimes easier to use with a harness than your average pair of jeans and a jumper! We have a variety of sizes and colours available starting at $220 for GSR/EVO Club Members

That covers the basic gear that you need to get started, as always, if you have any specific questions please feel free to give us a call on (08) 8332 8811, or email andrew@autosportdirect.com.au

Do I need a tow strap ??

By providing one, you give the recovery team a location to use that won't damage any bodywork.

While the recovery crews do what they can do avoid damage, sometimes they HAVE to attach the tow strap somewhere underneath/behind the front splitter...
