Peter Gazzard claims third Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb08 Nov, 2011 12:30 AM
PETER Gazzard laid down the gauntlet early on Saturday morning, shouting to his opposition via his race tactics "catch me if you can."
They couldn't!
Gazzard (50) won his third Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb championship in the space of the last four years and at his sixth attempt since the event started in 2006.
Glorious weather treated drivers, officials and spectators to a wonderful weekend of racing at the Valley Lake, as competitors drove hard against the clock.
In the first of his seven attempts on the 1.3km uphill course, Gazzard stopped the clock at 51.85 seconds, a personal best for the Mount Gambier based driver and only marginally outside Kevin Mackrell's 2010 race record of 51.61.
Gazzard's previous best time in the first five editions of the event was last year's 52.04 seconds when runner-up to Traralgon (Victoria) based Mackrell, who has also won the "Legend" three times.
Gazzard also went on to break the 52 second barrier two more times for the weekend with a second best effort of 51.89.
Mackrell contested six drives up the hill, but his best was 52.25.
Third best was Tristan Catford, timed at 53.10 in his immaculate looking Mitsubishi Evo, while Brad Trenwith (Mazda RX7) and Chris Thomson (Nissan GTR) rounded out the top five with times of 53.62 and 53.89 respectively.
The Gazzard v Mackrell Show added another chapter to its ever-growing dynasty with a sixth consecutive quinella and offering some spice for 2012 when the pair are almost certain to square off again.
