Mitsubishi GSR/EVO Club Champion 2011Yes MGEC Cup is over for yet another year, with the 2011 club championship seeing many MGEC members battle it out over 12 challenging rounds! The leader board changed hands several times throughout the year, and the championship was decided in the last few rounds at Collingrove Hillclimb! MGEC Cup 2011 was high on the stakes, and with a revamped competitive feel amongst the members, the outright winner would be again truly deserved.
This Members Only competition is not all about performance - but rather improvement and consistency. The late season expanded from mere Collingrove Hill Climbs and Modern Regularity, to also include Motorkhanas at Monarto and 1/8 mile Drag Racing in Whyalla/Mildura. The championship focused on encouraging members to come & try motorsport, enjoying their motor vehicles in a safe environment.
Points were awarded for improvement in times (and number of runs) in the Sporting Car Club's Multiclub Hillclimb Series and State round Motorkhanas, and also for rankings at the Austin 7 Club's Modern Regularity and ANDRA Drag Racing Events.
The MGEC Cup is based on a best of format. In effect, a bad round or the inability to enter an event was always keeping the championship alive!
Popularity for the mass variety of events this year saw a spread of member entries. MGEC Cup favours inexperienced drivers; the more likely they will improve, higher the points! Conversely, others pushed to their limits just to scrape a fraction of second; another fantastic element to the MGEC Cup series.
Huge congratulations to Craig Van Diemen (EVO 6.5) for winning the Mitsubishi GSR/EVO Club Championship 2011! Backing up his runner-up in MGEC Cup 2010, Craig not only improved significantly throughout the hillclimb component, but did so at class record breaking pace! These times are no easy feat to improve upon, especially when you are all the way up the front! We can only see the improvements flourish when Craig further develops his Evo for next year...
MGEC CHAMPION 2011:

No stranger to MGEC Cup, 2009 Champion Michael Willis makes a fast finish to get amongst the ranks showing pin point consistency is one of his most reputable driving assets. You get the Fox to hit a 9/10th or 10/10th or 11/10th target time and he will nail it better than any other club driver. What we forget is Michael is highly focused on and capable of pointy end results from his well maintained street going Evo 9, which often finds him challenging brute contenders in the unrestricted competition classes where results count for everything. In 2012 we hope to see the Fox fight to lift the bar and outperform the top tier of local high rollers!
